The West Side Lumber Co. had bridge tender shanties at each of their four bridges to guard against fires. The watchmen were added when the West Side Lumber Company found out that they would be given an insurance break to prevent the bridges from burning down when molten metal from the brakes would drip onto the wooden structures. While the engine was taking on water, the watchman would walk underneath the log cars on the bridge catwalk. The watchman led a quiet existence. The best known is River Bridge shanty which was replaced in 1960 with a new building. The kit includes one each of both the EARLY and LATE versions. The other three shanties are more obscure and appear in various photographs partially hidden. The other three bridges are Clavey, Bourland, and Niagara. The River Bridge shanty, as were the rest, were manned 24/7 by bridge tenders. Most were never painted and took on a dark patina as they weathered over the years. Because the two shanties included in the kit are very similar, you should pay closeattention to not mix up the parts.
